Glock switches are smaller than a quarter, cheap and unassuming. So much so that when the first switch-equipped cannons appeared in the city, Birmingham police didn't know what they were looking at.

"When we initially saw them we knew the gun looked different than how it was made, so we started an inquiry with the ATF," explained BPD Chief Scott Thurmond. "I'm shocked because this is a huge threat to our community."
The device fits on the back of the Glock and allows the user to switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic. When engaged, the switch overrides the trigger mechanism to act as a machine gun.
"For every pull of the trigger, he fires multiple shots," added Ashley Lightner, ATF special agent in charge of the agency's cases in Alabama. “It can fire at a rate of eleven to twelve hundred rounds per minute. It is very dangerous for innocent bystanders. It is not a precision weapon.
Lightner, ATF agents and local authorities showed firepower in the local area. Using a Glock 17, the professional fired fifteen rounds from the semi-automatic weapon and repeated it with the Glock switch.

It took only one second to fire these cartridges with the Glock switch, compared to about six seconds with a semi-automatic.
"There's a lack of control, it's spraying balls everywhere," Thurmond said. "These are not targeted shots and using them could hurt a lot of innocent people."
"When they're not accurate, if a person tries to shoot another person, there's a good chance an innocent bystander is nearby and there's a good chance he's going to get shot," he said. Lightner said. "And we've seen more in our community and across the country."
BPD started looking at Glock switches in Birmingham about a year ago. ATF confirms that frequency has increased in the Southeast over the past three months.

"We hear about it regularly at ShotSpotter, so we know it exists in our town," Thurmond added.
ShotSpotter is a police tool that maps shootings across the city. BPD released the latest recording of a ShotSpotter report where they believe a Glock switch was being used. We can clearly hear 26 shots being fired in seconds.
Earlier this year, BPD recovered a gun with a Glock switch in an officer-involved shooting. Even though they don't have direct contact with these fires, it changes the way officials do their jobs.
"To see it in a handgun, the ability to fire multiple bullets very quickly through something that could be hidden in someone's pocket, belt or somewhere else, is unsettling," Thurmond said.

According to the ATF, the more devices come from outside the country or are manufactured domestically, the easier they are to find.
"It's pretty simple," Lightner admitted. "You can find them on the street. Over the last few years we've seen prices online ranging from $15 to $30, we've seen an increase here recently with the popularity going up to $150 online. You can probably put them on the street, they cost over $1000.
"There is no state law banning Glock switches or machine guns, although there are in other states," reported Prim Escalona, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Alabama. "Alabama doesn't have that."
So far, the Escalona office has pursued one case in Tuscaloosa. It is important to note that only the Glock switch violates federal law.
