Tricare Young Adult Enrollment - One of the trickiest parts of having young children is making sure they have access to health insurance. While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandated that insurers extend coverage to children up to age 26, that mandate does not apply to Tricare because Tricare's technology is not insurance. And federal law prevents children from staying on their parents' Tricare once they turn 21, or 23 if they're in school full-time. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2011 allows the Department of Defense to create a premium version of Tricare that will be available to children by the time they reach Tricare age (21/23) through Chapter 26. The product we created was called Tricare Young Adult ( YOU AND).

TYA works exactly like regular Tricare. Beneficiaries choose between Tricare Prime and Tricare Standard. Each program works the same as if you were not on TYA, with a few modifications.

For 2022, the TYA Select premium will be $265 per month. TYA Prime premiums will be $512 per month. In addition, the child will have deductibles and payments commensurate with their sponsor's status (AD/retired) and chosen by Tricare, but the deductible is paid in Group B regardless of when their sponsor enters the military. . TYA profits are reassessed every two years to ensure they cover the costs of this self-financing scheme.

Another important cost to consider is the catastrophe cap. The catastrophic cap is the most you'll pay out-of-pocket for covered services.

A family using TYA is subject to the Group B catastrophic cap for sponsor status (AD or pensioner) even if the sponsor is in Group A. But the rest of the family still uses the Group A catastrophic cap even if there is an A. child using TYA.

For example, our family used Tricare Select as retirees and we have a child on Tricare Young Adult Select. Our family catastrophe limit is $3,706 this year and for everyone

, we will stop paying once we reach this limit. But before it stops paying, it will have to collect another $215 in fees.

Once no one uses TYA, the disaster limit will return to normal. It's all funky and doesn't make sense, but it's true.

Note on Group A and Group B: Group A and Group B indicate the date the sponsor entered the military. If the sponsor joined the military before January 1, 2018, you are Group A - with certain exceptions, such as those on TYA, who are always considered Group B. If the sponsor joined the military on or after January 1, 2018, you are Group B.

The amount that applies to your catastrophe limit applies throughout the year, even if you change location or membership plans or transfer.

You'll want to do this about a month before the child becomes eligible for regular Tricare to make sure there's no delay in coverage. You will have to pay the premium for the first two months when you register.

TYA is not the only option for children who grew up in a regular Tricare area. Other options include:

When comparing options, be sure to consider not only monthly premiums, but also deductibles, maintenance costs, and catastrophic caps. Most families can find cheaper coverage, but not nearly as much coverage as Tricare. You need to think about the treatment your child usually takes and the risk you want to take in the event of a serious illness or accident.

Young people using TYA are entitled to a military ID to demonstrate their eligibility for medical care. Your child will need to get a new TYA Military ID as the old one will expire. You cannot get a new ID until the child is eligible for TYA, even if you have already set up TYA.

And if DEERS doesn't show they've advanced until later, you'll need to update before you get a new ID. And sometimes DEERS and the Tricare supplier don't communicate well. They can get an identity card at their local passport and identity card office just like everyone else.

Technically, TYA is not supposed to talk to parents because these children are legally adults. Your results may vary - some parents are able to register their children on the phone and in other situations the child has to do it themselves.

If your child gets a job with health insurance, make sure they are not properly enrolled in TYA. This keeps them TYA eligible if they are no longer doing the job and need to return to TYA.

Keep all documents and open all mail. Anecdotal evidence suggests that there are more problems with TYA registration than non-YA registration. You never know when you will need to prove that your child was registered correctly or not registered incorrectly. It will be much easier if you know what is going on and have the documentation to prove it.
